On 27 February 2024, the European Commission published a pivotal Communication on Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership. This strategic document outlines a comprehensive plan to position the EU as a leader in advanced materials, recognising them as essential for the twin green and digital transition, and as vital components for the EU’s long-term competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy.
The Communication sets the foundation for future action through five key pillars, which will be developed in collaboration with EU Member States, industry stakeholders, and other key partners:
1. Strengthening the European Research & Innovation Ecosystem: Enhancing the research and innovation landscape to support advancements in materials science.
2. Fast-Tracking Innovative Materials to the Market: Accelerating the commercialisation of cutting-edge materials to meet industry needs and drive economic growth.
3. Increasing Capital Investment and Access to Financing: Boosting investment and improving financial access for materials innovation and production.
4. Fostering Production and Use: Promoting the development and utilisation of advanced materials across various sectors.
5. Creating a Technology Council: Establishing a council to guide and coordinate the initiative with Member States, Horizon Europe-associated countries, and industry players.
This strategy is set to play a crucial role in advancing the EU’s position in the global materials sector and ensuring sustainable development and technological leadership.
